Driving Lessons
Professional Manual & Automatic Driving Lessons in South Devon
Ucan Drive SW provides professional manual and automatic tuition across Paignton, Torquay, Newton Abbot and surrounding South Devon areas. Our fully qualified instructors deliver flexible availability, strong local coverage, and consistently high standards of tuition.
We offer flexible lesson times, including evenings and weekends (subject to instructor availability). Our friendly, experienced instructors deliver calm, structured tuition and tailor every lesson to your ability and confidence level.
We recommend lesson durations of 90 minutes to 2 hours. This allows us to focus on your individual targets, strengthen key techniques, and develop driving skills more effectively. As a result, learners enjoy steady progress and lasting confidence.
Manual Driving Lessons
Our manual driving lessons suit learners who want full control behind the wheel. We pace every lesson to suit you while focusing on confidence, road awareness, and safe decision-making. We structure each session around your progress and set clear goals so you always know what you’re working towards. During your first lesson, we introduce the car controls and help you begin driving at a comfortable pace.
Automatic Driving Lessons
Automatic lessons suit learners who prefer a simpler driving experience. Without clutch or gear changes, many pupils can focus more easily on positioning, hazards, and overall confidence.
Mock Tests
We provide mock driving tests for pupils who may not learn with us regularly but would like professional feedback on their current driving ability. During these sessions, we highlight strengths, identify areas for improvement, and clearly explain what is needed to reach test standard.
As part of the mock test experience, we conduct two mock tests, each lasting approximately 30–40 minutes. This gives pupils the opportunity to experience realistic test conditions, receive detailed feedback, and focus on specific areas to improve before their official driving test.
Assessment Drive
Our assessment drives are designed for pupils who want an overall evaluation of their current driving ability. These sessions focus on identifying strengths and areas for development, with clear guidance on next steps to help progress towards test standard. Assessment drives are ideal for learners who are unsure where they currently stand or who are returning to driving after a break.
Parking 101
Our Parking 101 sessions are designed to help learners build confidence with the fundamentals of parking in a calm and supportive environment. Whether you’re struggling with bay parking, parallel parking, or simply judging space and positioning, Ucan Drive SW can help you develop the skills and techniques needed to park safely and accurately. These sessions focus on low-speed control, effective use of mirrors and reference points, and building overall confidence, with clear guidance tailored to your individual needs to help you progress towards test standard and everyday driving independence.
How Many Lessons Will I Need?
At UCAN Drive SW, we don’t just count hours — we focus on outcomes.
Nationally, learners in the UK take an average of around 45 hours of professional driving lessons, plus 20–25 hours of private practice, before reaching test standard. That’s roughly 65–70 hours behind the wheel for most people.
Our aim is to help our pupils reach test standard in under the national average expectation, while always putting safety, confidence, and quality first.
From your very first lesson, your instructor creates a structured learning plan tailored to your ability, experience, and goals. We set clear targets, review progress regularly, and adapt your training so you continue moving forward efficiently.
We also focus strongly on how people learn. Using principles from Edgar Dale’s Cone of Learning, we understand that people retain more when they actively take part in their learning. Simply being told something isn’t enough. Learners remember more of what they read, even more of what they see, and far more of what they actually do.
That’s why our lessons are practical, engaging, and hands-on. We explain new skills clearly, demonstrate them where needed, and then give you plenty of opportunity to practise in real driving situations. This approach helps information stick, builds confidence faster, and turns knowledge into safe driving habits.
Our commitment is simple: to help you reach test standard as quickly and as safely as possible. Through structured teaching, personalised targets, and supportive instruction, we guide you every step of the way — not just to pass your test, but to become a confident, capable driver for life.
That’s our commitment to you.
